Buying a used motorcycle can be a great way to experience ownership without breaking the bank! Plus, it can be exciting to give a second, or third, life to a bike while making it your own. However, as you partake on the used buying process, it’s important to know you’re investing in a quality ride.

What to Have With You

When you are ready to view inventory firsthand, there are a few things you should have with you to be prepared. Whether you’re buying from a dealership or a private seller, make sure to bring some cash with you. If you fall in love, you’ll want to have enough to cover a deposit or an outright purchase.

You should also bring a few tools with you to help you determine if the bike is in good condition. You’ll need a flashlight to improve visibility during inspection and a screwdriver to help you test the spokes. It can also be useful to have a notebook and pen, or your phone’s notes app, to jot down important details and answers to your questions.

Body

As you begin looking at the inventory, start by taking a good look at the motorcycle body. Look for visible signs of wear, such as dents or scratches, that can indicate previous collisions or problems. If the body seems unusually rough, you might encounter maintenance issues with that particular bike later on.

Keep these things in mind:

  • Does the fuel tank appear free of flakes and have an untouched paint coat?
  • Are the fenders and side covers clear of dents and scratches?
  • Is the seat free of tears or indents?
  • Are there signs of rust damage?

Engine

If you’re happy with the appearance of the bike’s body, move onto an engine inspection. This might be the most vital aspect of your purchase, so be diligent! Request to inspect the engine while it's cold, so you can see how the bike starts, idles, and runs. Trust your gut! If something seems off or like a costly problem, don’t be afraid to walk away.

Keep these things in mind:

  • Does the engine blow discolored smoke?
  • Do you hear any rattles or rumbles in the engine?
  • Is the exhaust running without leaks or signs of damage?
  • Is the transmission able to hold its gear or does it backfire?
  • Are there issues with the clutch?

Tires

Although tires can be easily replaced, their condition can influence your purchase. Pay special attention to the wheel itself.

Keep these things in mind:

  • Do the spokes make a “ping” sound when hit with a screwdriver handle (like it should)?
  • Are the tires free of rot and provide adequate tread?
  • Do you see dents in the wheel or notice wobble when it spins?
  • Are the chains and belts in good condition?

If you’re uncertain about the condition of a bike, it would be beneficial to ask a trusted mechanic to assist you with the inspection.
