How Triumph Motorcycles All Started
For over a hundred years, the English-borne Triumph Motorcycle Company has been an international leader in the field of motorcycles. In The Beginning
Way back in 1902, not very long after the invention of the human-powered bicycle, the first Triumph motorcycle rolled off an assembly line in Coventry, England. Before this development, Triumph was primarily known as a bicycle manufacturer, and they decided to add a small single-cylinder Belgian Minerva engine to the frame of one of their bikes to build their own motorcycle.
By 1905, Triumph was manufacturing its own engines for its line of motorcycles. This led to their entrance into the world of racing. By 1910, production passed one thousand bikes per year.
During The World Wars
Triumph was a supplier of motorcycles to the Allied forces during World War I, allowing for soldiers and military personnel to traverse fields and roads quickly and easily throughout Europe’s battlegrounds. In 1940, during World War II, the Coventry factory was bombed by the Germans, destroying it. But Triumph didn’t stay down for long. The company soon rebuilt in Meriden in the West Midlands of England, allowing them to build over 40,000 Triumph motorcycles for military usage between 1942 and 1945.
Conquering The United States
Following World War II, the Triumph Corporation was established in the United States to increase sales of the company’s motorcycles. The returning soldiers from World War II had enjoyed riding Triumph bikes and brought their appetite for them home, which boosted sales and increased the company’s profile among Americans. When Marlon Brando, a Hollywood icon, rode a Triumph motorcycle in his 1953 movie The Wild One, this only made the bikes even more popular amongst Americans, who sought out the bikes in droves and enjoyed riding them on the racing circuit and on highways.
