The used motorcycle market contains both great models that have a lot of riding left in them and clunkers that might be better off scrapped. If you want to get a good deal on a used motorcycle, you need to be able to tell the difference. Luckily, all it takes is a thorough inspection to find out more about a used motorcycle’s overall condition. This guide from Boise Indian® Triumph will guide you through the steps of performing a basic used motorcycle inspection.

Outer Appearance

Start by taking a look at the used motorcycle’s exterior. While minor dings and scratches usually aren’t cause for concern in and of themselves and can usually be painted over, these dings and scratches can tell you more about how frequently and how hard the used motorcycle has fallen in its past. While inspecting the used motorcycle’s exterior, don’t forget to make sure that the front and rear wheels are aligned. Misaligned wheels often indicate that a motorcycle has suffered a crash.

Internal Components

Speaking of alignment, once you’re done check the used motorcycle’s exterior, take a look at the nuts, bolts, valves, brakes, rotors, drain plugs, injectors, carburetors, tires, chains, and throttle bodies inside the bike itself. Internal components that appear misaligned or in poor condition usually indicate a lack of proper maintenance.

Basic Systems

A motorcycle’s basic systems like its fuel system, cooling system, and electrical system are absolutely critical to the vehicle’s performance. The fuel in the used motorcycle tank should be free of metal flakes and discoloration. The cooling system should also be carefully inspected. Don’t forget to take a look at the air filter and spark plug. Since these components are easy to replace, them being in poor condition is a major sign of poor overall maintenance.
