Risks

Riding in warmer weather after a cold winter can bring some risks. There are few safety precautions you can take to reduce your chances of an accident.

Heat can cause problems when on your motorcycle. Your vision can be impaired thanks to a “sun dazzle” that appears on the road. This will create a glare off of other vehicles.

Another potential problem is health issues. Riding in warm weather can lead to something as mild as a sunburn to something more severe like developing heatstroke. When your body overheats, you can experience symptoms like headaches, loss of consciousness, dizziness, and even organ failure.

Stay Hydrated

The best tip for warm weather motorcycle riding is to drink water. After all, dehydration is going to be the most common issue you’ll face this summer. As you ride, you lose hydration from heat, exercising, and clothing. Pack plenty of water as well as salty snacks or a sports drink to replace electrolytes you lose through sweat.

Ride During Cooler Times

Another way to combat hot weather is to hop on your motorcycle during the cooler times of the day. We know you may not always have a choice of when you’re on the road, but when you do, make sure to take advantage of that. Temperatures tend to peak around 3 to 5 p.m. each day in the summer, so avoiding that window of time is a good idea. You can also plan to eat a meal in an air-conditioned restaurant to wait out the extreme temperatures. We recommend traveling early in the morning or after the sun sets.

Take Breaks

One more tip for dealing with warmer weather is to take breaks. This may sound obvious, but plenty of people forget to take breaks! The heat will make you tire faster, so you’ll want to give your spine, eyes, brain, and bike a break. Stop by a rest area or tourist attraction. Take this time to fuel up on snacks and water. Your body will thank you for letting it rest before the next stretch of your trip.
